MSU MSES

Countdown to IMAT

MSES hits Quebec City, Canada to attend this premier materials conference!

What is MSES?

The Materials Science and Engineering Society (MSES) at Michigan State University is dedicated to fostering a community of students passionate about the materials field. We provide professional development opportunities, academic support, and a social network for future engineers and scientists. We also do lots of fun MSE crafts and social events!

Whether you are interested in metals, polymers, ceramics, or more, we would love to have ya!

Meet the Board

Reed Blocksome Headshot

M. Reed Blocksome

President

Reed is a passionate MSE student with wideranging interests. He studies soft matter and chemical physics to develop "smart materials" in the Szczepanski Lab. He has co-authored an article in Macromolecules on photoswitchable cross-linking with expansions on this topic in the works. He also serves as President of the MSU Bladesmithing Club and competes nationally on the MSU Crew team.

Lily Velez-Lewis Headshot

Lily Velez-Lewis

Vice President

Lily is a materials science junior pursuing a concentration in metallurgy and a minor in geophysics. She currently works in the Dorfman Mineral Physics Lab studying how iron concentrations in deep earth minerals affect seismic wave velocities, alongside a project at Arizona State University focused on impact meteor crater dating. Outside of her academic and research pursuits, Lily can often be found forging, exploring, or spending time with her dog, Fozzie.

Graham Rainoldi Headshot

Graham Rainoldi

Treasurer

Graham is an MSE junior with a strong interest in metals and composites. Serving as Treasurer, he manages our finances and coordinates professional development events. Outside of academics, Graham is highly committed to his IM soccer team.

Courtney Crews Headshot

Courtney Crews

Secretary

Courtney is a junior MSE student and engineer for MSU Baja Racing, where she recently spearheaded failure analysis on a gearbox gear to determine failure modes and develop improved testing strategies for competition. This past summer, she interned at AGS Automotive, auditing assembly lines and optimizing time studies for truck bumper production for the "Big 3" automakers.

Luke Brydges Headshot

Luke Brydges

Outreach Chair

Luke is a senior from Buffalo, NY, majoring in Civil Engineering with a Materials Science and Engineering minor. In addition to serving on the MSES board, he is an active member of the MSU Bladesmithing Club. Luke is passionate about fitness, skiing, playing pickleball, and traveling. Following graduation, he plans to get involved in industrial aerospace applications. Go Bills!

Marc Woods Headshot

Marc Woods

Education Chair

Marc is an MSE junior with research experience in 3D-printed materials and tissue engineering, where he focuses on developing and testing materials for biomedical applications. Outside of his academic and research pursuits, Marc enjoys music, running, and playing basketball. He is passionate about his field and excited to help spread awareness of the wonders of materials science across the MSU community.

Dr. Tyler Johnson Headshot

Dr. Tyler Johnson

Faculty Advisor

Dr. Johnson is a Teaching Specialist in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. He provides guidance to the society and supports our mission of social and professional growth. If he doesn't hold back, Dr. Johnson will always win MSES materials jeopardy.
